Air Show Spectacular to Celebrate Townsville’s 150th Birthday

The Royal Australian Air Force has announced Townsville as the location for the 2016 Air Show.

The RAAF will stage the major air show along The Strand on Saturday 15 October 2016.  The event will be accompanied by fireworks and live music.

RAAF Base Townsville will then hold an open day the next day, Sunday 16 October 2016.

“Air Force is staging this air show as part of celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the city’s foundation,” Air Force Head of Special Events, Air Commodore Noddy Sawade, said.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Air Force to provide such an event over Townsville’s foreshore,” he said.

Aircraft displaying at the air show will operate from RAAF Base Townsville, which has a long association with the city.

Senior ADF Officer at RAAF Base Townsville, Wing Commander Matthew Harvey, said the Air Force had a long history with Townsville, dating back to World War Two.

“This event gives Air Force the opportunity to not only celebrate Townsville’s 150th birthday but to also celebrate the long historical links between Air Force and the city,” Wing Commander Harvey said.

Townsville Mayor Councillor Jenny Hill welcomed the announcement and the RAAF’s vote of confidence in the city.

“Townsville has strong and enduring links with our armed forces and it is fantastic that we will be hosting a world-class air show along the Strand to headline the city’s 150th commemorations,” Cr Hill said.

“A show of this size and prestige will attract tens of thousands of people from right around our region for the biggest community celebrations seen in the city in many years.”

The last major air show in Townsville was in 2009 when some 70,000 people witnessed a display over The Strand foreshore.

More information will be made available closer to the event.
