Iroquois A2-1020

Restored by members of No 21 (City of Melbourne) Squadron, A2-1020 last served as a training aid, and was operated as a training aircraft until the mid-1980s. As a result, the aircraft had been extensively modified and modernised since its service with No 9 Squadron in Vietnam.

Due to the aircraft's significance, it was decided to restore the aircraft to represent its configuration on the day of the Battle of Long Tan, and as such, a great deal of research was required to understand the aircraft's equipment and colour scheme on that day, before any more than basic work could be carried out on the aircraft. Complicating matters further was the fact that all technical publications and manuals had been amended countless times since 1966, with all previous versions destroyed as per RAAF requirements.

However, the RAAF Museum and No 21 Squadron were fortunate enough to be provided with period photographs and other historical information that allowed the aircraft to be restored back to its 1966 configuration and appearance.
