RAAF School of Technical Training

RAAF School of Technical Training (RAAFSTT) officially adopted its current name on 1 December 1952.  Prior to 1952, the unit transitioned through many names and many training functions. The school predominantly conducted aircraft apprentice training, but was also involved in instructional and National Service Training.  In 1993 the RAAF’s Technical Trade Restructure saw the apprentice scheme disbanded and the introduction of a new National Aerospace trade Group comprising of the Avionics, Aircraft, Structural and Life Support fitter trades.

Today RAAFSTT is a tri-Service training organisation whose charter is to effectively and efficiently train Navy, Army and Air Force personnel for employment within the three arms of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). RAAFSTT provides initial employment and postgraduate training for ADF aircraft related technical trades to meet the requirements and capability of today’s’ modern Defence force.

Our mission is: ‘To prepare aviation maintenance and engineering personnel, ready to pursue ongoing technical mastery, in support of Australia’s Defence Force capability’

RAAFSTT remains the largest and most diverse training unit in the Air Force with over sixty technical-related courses conducted each year and an annual through-put of around 900 students.  Graduates of RAAFSTT provide a significant and positive input into the operational capability of the ADF, contributing to the technical maintenance of aircraft, the communication processes, life support for aircrew and various support functions relating to aircraft engineering.
