RAAF Wagga Heritage Centre
The original RAAF Wagga Museum display was opened in 1995 and was located in the old guard house building at the main entrance to the base. Itself a heritage building, and readily accessible on the main road, the guard house formed an appropriate location for the display. However, staffing concerns and a need to refurbish the building led to its closure in 2003. Most of the artefacts were transferred to the RAAF Museum at Point Cook in Victoria for safe keeping. In 2008, the Wagga Wagga community called for the museum to be re-opened.
As a result, early in 2009, Defence completed the last stage of major restoration works, at a value of $75,000, to restore the building for public access, including better disabled access. Air Force plans to re-open the facility as the “RAAF Wagga Heritage Centre” under a recent Chief of Air Force policy which recognises the value of regional heritage centres in celebrating and strengthening the links between Air Force bases and their local communities.
The planning for the new RAAF Wagga Heritage Centre was undertaken by a Museum Reference Group which included Kay Hull MP, the Wagga Wagga City Council and representatives from local business and community groups, as well as from Air Force. The Group’s proposal for the Heritage Centre was presented to a Public Forum in May 2009 and was well received. At this stage, nearly 50 community members have volunteered to work at the Heritage Centre.
The Heritage Centre display is being designed by the RAAF Museum to professionally showcase the RAAF, the role of RAAF Base Wagga in preparing the Air Force workforce of the future, and the special relationship between the Base and the local community. Much of the display will comprise Air Force heritage artefacts, whilst one room will be devoted to displays of community-loaned items. Air Force is funding the procurement of display cabinets, wall mountings, curtains and specialist lighting, to the value of around $130,000, to ensure the display is up to current industry standards.
The Heritage Centre will be managed by a committee of Air Force and community members and is planned to open three days per week. Many of the volunteer staff are currently undertaking a Certificate 2 course in Museum Practice at the local TAFE, kindly sponsored by NATCOE.
Air Force is proud to be working in partnership with the Wagga Wagga community to open the Heritage Centre in spring 2010.
History of Ground Training Wing
In November 1998 a directive was given to COMTRG-AF to reorganise Training Command which resulted in the formation of Air Training Wing and Ground Training Wing on 01 Jan 99. GTW was initially to consist of the following 11 Elements under the command of OC GTW:
- Headquarters Ground Training Wing
- Defence International Training Centre (DITC)
- ADF School of Languages (ADFLANGS)
- RAAF School of Technical Training (RAAFSTT)
- RAAF School of Management and Training Technology (RAAFSMTT)
- RAAF School of Fire and Security (RAAFSFS)
- Photographic School (PHOTS)
- Central Photographic Establishment (CPE)
- Health Services Training Flight (HSTF)
- Combat Support Unit Wagga (CSUWAG)
- Combat Support Unit Fairbairn (CSUFBN)
HQ GTW was originally to be situated at RAAF Williams, but the first OC GTW made a successful submission to COMTRG-AF to have the HQ located at RAAF Wagga. From the original 10 Elements, PHOTS and CPE were disbanded in December 1999, Combat Support Unit Fairbairn disbanded June 2003, RAAF School of Management and Technology Training disbanded 31 December 2004 and in 01 July 06 Combat Support Unit Wagga came under the control of 396 Combat Support Group.
In July 2004, Defence Explosive Ordnance Training School (DEOTS) at Orchard Hills was broken out of RAAFSTT. RAAFSALT was formed 01 December 2005 incorporating the Administration and Logistics components from RAAFSTT, HSTF, and Training Programs and Development Flight elements from Headquarters Ground Training Wing. HSTF was subsequently transferred to Health Services Wing.
The RAAF College and Ground Training Wing amalgamated on 01 January 2008 to form a much larger and restructured RAAF College with its Headquarters at RAAF Base Wagga. An explanation of the RAAF College badge is detailed below.
