Service Profile: Jim Wilson

Group Captain James Stewart Wilson AFC AE (ACA 15389) joined the Royal Australian Air Force in June 1941 and served his country as a pilot for 34 years.

Jim started his flying career at No. 8 Elementary Flying Training School. He progressed from Tiger Moths to Avro Ansons, Avro Trainers, Airspeed Oxfords and Liberators before seeing active service in the Pacific theatre during World War 2.

Conversion to Lincolns prefaced further active service during the Malayan Emergency.

As Jim's flying service in the Permanent Air Force continued, he experienced further conversions onto Canberras, Mustangs, Meteors (Mks 7 & 8), Wirraways, Chipmunks, B-47s, T-33s, Macchis, Dakotas, Vampires and Bristol Freighters.

Squadron service involved postings to Nos. 1, 6, 23 and 102 Squadrons plus 3520th CCTW (USAF).

Flying instruction at Central Flying School was another part of Jim's flying experience during his lengthy service.

In recognition of his valuable service, Jim was awarded the Air Force Cross and the Air Efficiency Award.
