Service Profile: Peter Hales
Peter Hales QC (ACA 19168) served as a pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force. The period of his service was from January 1966 to January 1989 when he retired with the rank of Wing Commander.
The inventory of aircraft which Peter flew during his service include Winjeel, Macchi, Neptune, Iroquois, Chinook, Squirrel, Jet Ranger and Nomad.
His flying training was carried out at Nos. 1 and 2 Flying Training Schools, after which he was a squadron pilot with No. 10 Squadron and No. 5 Squadron.
Peter served as a Flight Commander of United Nations Emergency Force No. 2 (UNEF2) based at Ismalia in Egypt, and as a Flight Commander of both No. 5 Squadron and No. 9 Squadron. He was also awarded a 'Category A Certificate' as an Iroquois pilot.
As Commanding Officer of No. 9 Squadron, Peter was gratified to receive the Duke of Gloucester Cup awarded to his squadron during his tenure as CO.
Peter's final appointment was Helicopter Operations Officer at Headquarters Operational Command (HQOC) at Glenbrook, NSW, in the lower Blue Mountains.
In recognition of his meritorious service, Peter was awarded the Queen's Commendation decoration.
