Recovered from Tasmania in 1977, the remains of A1-8 were airlifted by RAAF Iroquois helicopter and transported to Point Cook. Restoration on the aircraft commenced in November 1979, utilising volunteer labour sourced from both inside and outside the RAAF in the Melbourne area. By 1985, restoration on the primary fuselage structure had been completed, in addition to the construction of a new tailplane, elevator and rudder and both upper and lower mainplanes.
During 1986, the Commanding Officer of No 2 Aircraft Depot at Richmond, New South Wales, offered to complete the restoration of A1-8 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of that unit. A Hawker Demon had been the first aircraft type repaired at No 2 Aircraft Depot, and the project was transported to RAAF Richmond aboard a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. After No 2 Aircraft Depot's anniversary celebrations in October 1986, the aircraft was relocated to Point Cook for display at the RAAF Museum.
