Smoke On, Go! The RAAF's Aerobatic Teams
Formation flying is a skill that military pilots must learn and practice throughout their career. Performing a complex aerobatic routine with other aircraft three metres from your wing is the ultimate expression of precision flying. Formation aerobatics encourages confidence in a leader and develops team spirit.
Since 1934, the RAAF has performed public displays with aerobatic teams to promote the RAAF and the skills of its pilots. Central Flying School officially sponsored some of these teams, while others were formed by a variety of units and squadrons.
Display formation aerobatics is a demanding and exacting profession. There is an element of risk, as there is in all flying, but the margin for error is slimmer.
This exhibition is the story of the formation aerobatic teams of the RAAF
The Roulettes are the current RAAF formation display team. Since 1970, they have been the most visible promotional asset of the Air Force and have performed before millions of Australians at national occasions and local community events.
