A38 Eurocopter Tiger

Procured under the Air 87 requirement for an armed reconnaissance helicopter, the Eurocopter Tiger was selected as the successful bid in December 2001. Twenty-two Tigers are to be acquired, with 18 of the aircraft to be assembled in the Australian Aerospace production facility located in Brisbane. The first two aircraft were delivered in December 2004, and the final deliveries are anticipated in 2008.

The armed reconnaissance variant of the Tiger is a modified version of the French Army's HAP helicopter, with modified weapons systems and upgraded engines.

Two MTU/Turbomeca/Rolls-Royce MTR390 turboshaft engines rated at 960 kW (1,285shp).

Maximum gross weight 6000 kg

DIMENSIONS:

Length 14 m; Height 3.81 metres; Wing span 13 metres

PERFORMANCE:

Maximum Speed 287 km/h (155 kt); Cruise speed 230 km/h (124 kt); Range 800 km.

ARMAMENT:

30mm cannon in chin turret, plus 70 mm unguided rockets and Hellfire anti-tank missiles on stub wing pylons.
