Horn Island

Historical photo of the base

An important base for aircraft staging between Australia and New Guinea, construction of an airfield at Horn Island was completed in 1941. By April 1942, No 32 Squadron was flying operations against enemy positions in New Guinea from the airfield. A number of other RAAF and US Army Air Force units operated from the base, as well as a huge number of transiting aircraft during the course of World War II.
