No. 38 Squadron

No. 38 Squadron is based at RAAF Base Townsville and operates the Hawker Pacific King Air light transport.

With the King Air, No.38 Squadron is able to provide flexible, reliable and efficient air lift for the Australian Defence Force throughout Australia and in to the immediate region. The unit was extensively involved with supporting the Australian Government’s response to the 2011 Queensland floods.

No. 38 Squadron is part of No. 86 Wing which forms part of Air Lift Group. The Squadron has a unique history, having formed in 1943 it served throughout South East Asia, the South Pacific, and towards Japan. Following the War, the unit has served in Malaya, Indonesia, Korea, Germany (for the Berlin Air Lift), East Timor, and the Solomon Islands.

For 45 years, No. 38 Squadron operated the venerable DHC-4 Caribou, which was renowned for his outstanding short take off and landing capabilities. The age and cost to Air Force of keeping this airframe in service meant the final Caribou was retired in 2009.
