No 86 Wing

The Royal Australian Air Force's No 86 Wing comprises Nos 36, 37 and 38 Squadrons and 68 Ground Liaison Section (Army). No 86 Wing is responsible for heavy, medium and light airlift operations.

In December 2006, No 36 Squadron re-equipped with the new C-17 Globemaster heavy airlift aircraft and relocated to RAAF Base Amberley, Queensland.

No 37 Squadron operates the C-130 Hercules. The primary role of the C-130 fleet is airborne operations, however, the C-130 fleet conducts all combat airlift roles except air-to-air refueling.

No 38 Squadron operates the DHC-4 Caribou for light tactical airlift from RAAF Base Townsville.
