Subject to NSW Health, RAAF Base Wagga and No. 1 Recruit Training Unit (1RTU) COVID-19 restrictions, course graduations may be cancelled at short notice. Please do not make any bookings to attend prior to official notification from 1RTU.
Families and friends of recruits are invited to attend the Graduation Parade at RAAF Base Wagga, Forest Hill, NSW. Graduation parades are held to acknowledge the completion of the Recruit Course for both permanent and reserve members joining the RAAF. The Graduation Parade gives family and friends the opportunity to join in celebrating the achievements of graduating aviators.
1RTU is located at RAAF Base Wagga, Forest Hill, NSW, approximately 10km east of Wagga Wagga on the Sturt Hwy. The base is located on the northern side of the Wagga Wagga Airport.
There is a limited bus service available from Wagga Wagga to RAAF Base Wagga however taxi services are available and the most accessible form of public transport. From the heart of Wagga Wagga, it will cost approximately $30-$35 for a taxi and should take no longer than 15 minutes.
RAAF Base Wagga has restricted entry, however, if you are attending a Graduation Parade your name should have been passed to the security checkpoint as part of your invitation process. Approach the main gate to the base, identify yourself to the staff as a 1RTU Graduation guest and they will direct you through to a nearby car park. You will then make your way over to the covered area to a desk where your name will be checked off a list, you will be signed in and given a visitor pass. You will then walk down to the main parade ground. All visitors are advised to arrive at RAAF Base Wagga at least 40 minutes prior to the start of the parade.
Due to parking limitations on the base, visitors who are currently serving in the ADF are also requested to park in the designated car park.
1RTU Graduation Parades commence at 10.30am. Visitors should be seated in the two large sheltered seating areas no later than 15 minutes prior to the start of the parade. Escorts and guides assist visitors. Seating is generally not reserved. The parade will generally take about 45 minutes.
At the conclusion of the parade, ushers will direct guests to the Middleton VC Club for an informal light lunch.
If the weather is inclement the Graduation Parade will be replaced by a Presentation Ceremony held in the Middleton VC Club. Any prospect of this occurring will be advised to guests on their arrival to RAAF Base Wagga. Light rain is unlikely to cause the cancellation of a parade.
Graduation Parade Function
After the parade, a light buffet lunch is held in the Middleton VC Club. The club is located within 1RTU only a short walk back toward the main gate, staff will be on hand to direct visitors. Graduating course members and their visitors are invited to the function, which includes a light buffet lunch, refreshments, a limited bar service, speeches and presentation of awards.
Professional framed photographs and DVDs depicting members of the graduating course can be purchased at the function. This service is provided by a private company.
After the Graduation Parade Function
After the Graduation Parade, graduates are able to spend time with their friends and have the opportunity to show them around 1RTU where the bulk of recruit training is delivered.
Visitors intending to come to the Graduation Parade with special needs are requested to detail their specific requirements to the person whose graduation they are attending.
The dress for guests at the Graduation Parade is minimum neat casual. Serving members are to be in Ceremonial Dress.
Graduation Parade Cancellations / Postponement
For a number of reasons, such as sustaining an injury or performance related issues, recruits may be delayed or may not complete recruit training. In these circumstances, they will be unable to graduate with the rest of their course. Sometimes these eventualities cannot be prevented and may occur at short notice.
Visitors are strongly encouraged to purchase deferrable and/or refundable travel tickets and accommodation bookings; to take out travel insurance; or to make other arrangements to protect against loss or expense arising from such eventualities.
Whilst every effort is made to notify visitors as soon as possible, the Commonwealth is not responsible and accepts no liability for any loss suffered or expense incurred arising from such eventualities.
