Commemoration of the Bombing of Darwin Flypast

Up to two F-35A Lightning II aircraft from No. 75 Squadron will conduct a low-level flypast over Darwin Esplanade, as mark of respect for the Commemoration of the Bombing of Darwin, on 19 February 2023.

The F-35A aircraft will fly over the Cenotaph travelling north-east to south-west, at approximately 200 metres above the ground. The aircraft will then conduct a second pass approaching from the north-west, before returning to RAAF Base Tindal.

The bombing of Darwin, on 19 February 1942 was the largest single attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia during WWII. On that day in two separate raids, 242 Japanese aircraft attacked Darwin’s township, harbour and airfields in an attempt to prevent the Allies from using them as bases to contest the invasion of Timor and Java.

All low level flying activities are conducted within strict safety and operational guidelines.

Flying is subject to change, including short notice cancellation, due to variables such as air traffic control requirements, weather, and operational availability.

Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military flying.
