Coates Hire Newcastle 500

The Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army, and the Royal Australian Air Force will join forces at the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 from 23-25 November 2018. In addition to the high-tech, high-skill and high-speed Supercar driver program on the ground, Air Force will take these common passions and mastery to the skies in a thrilling aerial display.

An F/A-18A/B Hornet can reach speeds of more than 1000km/h and will perform on both days over the weekend at around 3pm. The Hornet will track from the north over the Stockton Bridge and along the river with an aerial handling display centered over the Newcastle Harbour precinct and Nobby’s Beach.

Following the aerial display, the F/A-18A/B Hornet will then perform a low-level flypast over Pit Straight on each day to mark the start of the main race. The Hornet aircraft will run-in from the east and conduct a low-level pass over Pit Straight at an altitude around 60m (200 feet) and at speeds of 900km/hr (550kcas) before making its departure over the Newcastle Cathedral and King Edward Park on its return journey to RAAF Base Williamtown.

On the ground, Supercar fans can register to potentially be selected to test their skills as an Air Force fast-jet pilot at the Air Force Simulator Experience trailer, plus browse through the Australian Army and Air Force capability displays featuring Team Army’s project car and street machines. The Australian Army Band Newcastle will entertain the crowds, and for young people considering a career in the ADF, Defence Force Recruiting career staff will be available with information and resources to get their career journey started.

ADF participation in the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 – Supercars showcases ADF capabilities and highlights the dedication and commitment of our ADF men and women who serve at home and abroad on operations.
