Historic RAAF aircraft commence journey to Townsville

Two restored Royal Australian Air Force aircraft veterans - a Mirage fighter jet A3-55 and a Winjeel Trainer A85-403 – will arrive back in Townsville on Sunday 02 August.
 
Queensland motorists may get a rare opportunity to see two restored Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) static display aircraft being transported by road convoy from RAAF Base Amberley in Ipswich to Townsville. 
 
RAAF Base Townsville Wing Commander Mat Green will be available for interview about the aircraft’s relocation from RAAF Base Amberley to their new permanent home at the RAAF Townsville Aviation Heritage Centre.

The planned route and timings for the Mirage convoy are detailed below.

Friday 31 Jul 20 - Convoy departs Amberley  ~0015 hours- Route A2 (Warrego Hwy) – Toowoomba Bypass, Dalby, Chinchilla, Miles; Route A5 (Leichhardt Hwy) – Wandoan, Taroom, Theodore, Banana.

Saturday 01 Aug 20 - Convoy departs Banana ~0600 hours. Route A5 – Dululu; Route A4 (Capricorn Hwy) – Dingo; Route 67 (Fitzroy Development Rd) and Route 70 (Peak Downs Rd) – Moranbah

Sunday 02 Aug 20 - Convoy departs Moranbah ~0600 hours. Route 70/A7 (Gregory Hwy) – Belyando Crossing, Charters Towers, Route A6 (Flinders Hwy) – RAAF Base Townsville.
