Number 81 Wing F-35A Lightning II squadrons —No. 2 Operational Conversion Unit, No. 3 Squadron and No. 77 Squadron—will be returning to RAAF Base Williamtown after a three month deployment. The squadrons will return to normal flying operations at RAAF Base Williamtown from 12 September 2022.
Fast jet squadrons will gradually return to RAAF Base Williamtown over the next few weeks. The jets have been operating out of RAAF Bases Darwin and Townsville over the past few months. Extensive runway works at RAAF Base Williamtown/Newcastle airport had temporarily shortened the runway from the preferred operating length for the F-35A Lightning II.
Flying is subject to variables including air traffic control requirements, weather and operational availability. As such, the training activity may be subject to cancellation at short notice.
Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military flying.
