The No. 1 Flying Training School (1FTS) Queens Colour was successfully transferred from Headquarters Air Academy to 1FTS during a Transfer of Guardianship Ceremony at RAAF Base East Sale on 5 February.
Over twenty members from 1FTS observed this unit milestone, which represented the inauguration of ab initio pilot training at RAAF Base East Sale using PC-21 aircraft and its supporting systems.
Commanding Officer of 1FTS, WGCDR Chris Pouncey, said receiving the Queen’s Colour was a symbolic link between the units’ past and future.
“The Queen’s Colour was awarded to the unit at Point Cook on 22 Apr 1981 and it represented the Sovereign’s appreciation for outstanding service delivered by a non-operational unit,” WGCDR Pouncey said proudly.
'The Queen’s Colour is a visual representation of the heritage of 1FTS as a part of the RAAF Academy at Point Cook.
“A new era of ADF ab initio pilot training began when 1FTS took on that responsibility and became part of a brand new Air Academy on 1 January 2019.
“The first ever Basic Pilots’ Course in the new Pilot Training System — Number 258 Pilots’ Course — commenced training on 14 January 2019.
“WGCDR Pouncey said 1FTS has embarked on an exciting endeavour of flying training because the new Pilot Training System represents a generational shift in the delivery of flying training in the ADF.
“For the first time in ab initio training, we will utilise simulators as part of a 21st century flying training system, which will significantly improve training efficiency and learning outcomes.
“Additionally, the PC-21 — the most cutting edge training aircraft in the world — and its state-of-the-art supporting systems will allow us to train more ADF pilots faster and to a higher standard to suit the needs of a fifth generation Air Force.”
FLGOFF Anna Yates was the 1FTS Colour Custodian of the ceremony, who took over the Queens Colour from FLGOFF Shawn Anderson of Headquarters Air Academy.
“I felt extremely honoured to play such an important role in the Transfer of Guardianship Ceremony and be a witness to this huge unit milestone,” FLGOFF Yates said.
“I am extremely proud of 1FTS for what it has accomplished so far and I look forward to seeing what the unit can achieve in the future.”
