Operation Details Tab

Details
A detachment from Royal Australian Air Force 79SQN based at RAAF Base Pearce, will deploy approximately 50 personnel, and up to six Hawk 127 Lead-In Fighter aircraft to RAAF Base Learmonth for Exercise Western Phoenix.

DATE:                16 to 31 August 2021

VENUE:             RAAF Base Learmonth, and the surrounding Exmouth region

Exercise Western Phoenix will allow Introductory Fighter Course students to further develop their formation, navigation and low-flying skills.

This will entail increased flying activity in the region, and formations of up to four aircraft may be seen in the vicinity of the airport and near the city centre as they depart and position for return to the airfield.

All flying activity is subject to change, including short notice cancellation, due to variables such as air traffic control requirements, weather and other aviation considerations.

Noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military flying.

Air Force appreciates the ongoing support of the Exmouth community during these activities.

The health and safety of all personnel participating in this exercise, and the community is paramount. Australian Defence Force personnel are required to adhere to state and territory travel restrictions and health advice with COVID-19 risk mitigation measures in place for Exercise Western Phoenix.

Information regarding the Hawk 127 is available on our Technology page

Imagery is available on the Defence Image Gallery.

Information on aircraft noise and current flying activities is available at http://www.defence.gov.au/aircraftnoise, or by calling 1300 DEFENCE (1300 333 362).

This flying activity is part of regular training. Flights and timings are changeable to best meet training objectives, they are not a scheduled flypast. This notice is to advise the local community in this area that they may hear some noise. We remind the community that everyone must observe all COVID-19 related health measures in their respective local government areas, including stay at home orders where they are in force.
