On Friday 21 February, at approximately 2.00pm, up to seven Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18A/B Hornets from No. 75 Squadron based at RAAF Base Tindal will arrive at RAAF Base Pearce to support Exercise Phoenix Black and Exercise Nigrum Pugio.
Exercise Phoenix Black and Exercise Nigrum Pugio are real-time mission scenarios that are designed to increase the skill level and effectiveness of our combat-ready Joint Terminal Attack Controller qualified personnel, in support of Australian Defence Force operational requirements; with No. 75SQN participating in air support elements.
Commanding Officer No. 75SQN, Wing Commander Pete Robinson said the exercise will deliver vital training opportunities:
‘With 75SQN providing a support element to exercise scenarios, training missions will include the use of the Lancelin Range over both weeks - with practice bombing and gunnery occurring in the first week and explosive ordnance expended in the second week - all in a controlled environment.
"Exercise scenarios also provide a significant training opportunity for fast jet aircrew to hone their skills and maintain currency – resulting in the delivery of highly skilled personnel who are operationally ready."
With No. 2 Flying Training School and No. 79 Squadron also located at RAAF Base Pearce, Air Force junior aircrew in training will also have the opportunity to engage with 75SQN personnel to gain an understanding of fastjet squadron operations.
As such, Wing Commander Robinson went on to thank the local community for their support to the delivery of multiple training activities for Air Force:
‘Exercise Phoenix Black and Exercise Nigrum Pugio represent important training for Defence personnel and we are grateful for the community’s ongoing support.’
No. 75SQN aircraft will operate from RAAF Base Pearce for two weeks commencing 23 February and concluding 6 March (including the public holiday 2 March), with flying operations being conducted between 10am and 10pm. Every effort will be made to minimise noise disturbance to the local community during operations.
In support of refuelling requirements, the No. 75SQN F/A-18A/B Hornets may make a scheduled stop at Broome International Airport on their journey to RAAF Base Pearce and on their return to RAAF Base Tindal on Saturday 7 March 2020.
