Air Vice-Marshal Robert Denney, AM

Air Vice-Marshal Robert Denney was born in Wollongong, New South Wales. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1991 as a cadet at the Australian Defence Force Academy studying Aeronautical Engineering. Transferring to University of Sydney in 1993, he completed his studies before graduating from Number 168 Pilots Course and completing Lead-In Fighter training on Macchi aircraft. He completed F-111 Operational Conversion Course followed by F-111 tours at Nos 1 and 6 Squadrons, then graduated from Empire Test Pilot School in the United Kingdom in 2000. He completed a postings as an F-111 test pilot at the Aircraft Research and Development Unit, Flight Commander at No 1 Squadron and Executive Officer at the Aircraft Research and Development Unit.

AVM Denney was posted to the Operational Requirements section of the New Air Combat Capability in Canberra in 2008, then attended the Joint Command and Staff Program at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto, Canada. On return to Australia in 2010, he was promoted to Wing Commander and posted as the Executive Officer at No 82 Wing at Amberley before taking Command of No 6 Squadron (Super Hornets) in December of that year.

Following Unit Command, AVM Denney was promoted to Group Captain and deployed to the Middle East Region as part of Operation OKRA, as the Commander of the Air Task Unit in the Combined Air Operations Centre at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, for which he was awarded a Commendation for Distinguished Service. He was then posted as the Chief of Staff for Air Combat Group during which he also completed the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom.

In Nov 2017, he again deployed on Operation OKRA to the Combined Air Operation Centre at Al Udeid Air Base, as the Commander of Air Task Group 630. On his return, he was appointed as Officer Commanding, Number 82 Wing commanding Super Hornet and Growler aircraft at RAAF Amberley. In 2018, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for exceptional service in air combat capability development and sustainment.

He was promoted to Air Commodore in 2018 and posted into the position of Director General - Air Command Operations at Joint Operations Command, in Canberra, performing the role of the Joint Force Air Component Commander. In 2020, AVM Denney was posted to Director General – Air Combat Capability in Air Force Headquarters where he was the Program Sponsor for Air Force’s Air Combat; Maritime Patrol and Response; and Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare Programs.

In November 2021, AVM Denney was promoted to Air Vice-Marshal and posted to his current position of Head of Air Force Capability.
