A civilian airfield since the early 1930s, Bundaberg was used as a training airfield by the RAAF from 1941. Initially home to No 12 Elementary Flying Training School, that unit soon moved to Lowood, and was replaced by No 8 Service Flying Training School. In addition, a variety of Reserve and Permanent Air Force squadrons operated from the field on coastal patrol and general reconnaissance tasks.
