Originally known as Jacky Jacky, Higgins field was constructed at the tip of the Cape York Peninsula and was a dispersal field for Horn Island. A variety of RAAF bomber squadrons passed through the field before deploying overseas, and No 1 Repair and Salvage Unit operated from the field from mid-1943 until late 1944.
