Historical photo of the base

During World War II, the Learmonth Airfield, also known as 'Potshot', provided protection for the US Navy's submarine base in the Exmouth Gulf, and also housed a variety of RAAF radar stations providing early warning of any enemy movements. Following World War II, the airfield was upgraded by No 5 Airfield Construction Squadron in the early 1970s, and today is one of the RAAF's bare bases that can support operational and exercise deployments as required.
