Thirty-four miles from Darwin, Livingstone was one of many fighter bases providing protection for the city after Japanese raids commenced in 1942. The base housed Kittyhawks of No 77 Squadron and Spitfires of No 457 Squadron, in addition to Spitfires of Nos 54 and 548 Squadrons of the (British) Royal Air Force.
