Historical photo of the base

Originally the home of No 6 Service Flying Training School during World War II, Mallala later was selected as the temporary base for flight test and transport support for the joint UK-Australian Weapons Research Establishment at Woomera. After the construction of RAAF Edinburgh in the mid-1950s, Mallala housed No 24 (City of Adelaide) Squadron until the final closure of the base in May 1960.
