A small civil airfield prior to World War II, by 1941 the Maryborough airfield had been dramatically expanded to serve as a training base for the RAAF. Although No 1 Radar School and Nos 3 and 6 Recruit Depots occupied the base in a limited capacity, the majority of efforts at Maryborough revolved around No 3 Wireless Air Gunners School, which operated between late 1941 until December 1944.
