Home of the first regional flying club in Australia, and with a history of flying dating back to 1919, Narromine airfield was handed over to the RAAF in mid-1940. Mainly used as a training base by No 5 Elementary Flying Training School and No 8 Operational Training Unit, No 618 Squadron of the (British) Royal Air Force also operated from the airfield during 1945.
