An Army Aviation Airfield since 1969, Oakey was originally constructed in early 1943 to provide a home for the RAAF's No 6 Aircraft Depot, to alleviate the high workload of No 3 Aircraft Depot at Amberley. After the war, the airfield was also used to store aircraft pending disposal, with 544 aircraft of various types at the base in December 1945.
