Historical photo of the base

Originally called Ham Common, Richmond airfield began as a New South Wales Government Flying School during World War I. By 1925, the RAAF had established a base at the site, and with the outbreak of World War II, several operational units were based at Richmond. Following World War II, Richmond housed maritime and transport squadrons, and has continued as the home of the RAAF's Air Lift Group.
