On 19 February 1942, 26-year-old Wing Commander Archibald Robert “Archie” Tindal was manning a Lewis machine gun against attacking Japanese aircraft at RAAF Base Darwin when he was killed in action.
RAAF Base Tindal near Katherine in the Northern Territory is named in his honour.
