Your Air Force Chaplains

What to expect from your Chaplains

Air Force Chaplains provide support to members of the Air Force and their families. This means helping members and their families work through a range of life issues, especially as they apply to military service, including:

  • marriage and relationships;
  • money;
  • relocation on posting;
  • being posted unaccompanied;
  • deployments;
  • practising faith; and
  • leaving the Air Force.

Chaplains understand the Air Force because we are in the Air Force. We know the system and who to speak to in the system. We work with commanders and we liaise with other Defence support services. Some of these are:

  • Medical / Regional Health Services
  • Defence Community Organisation
  • Defence Families Australia
  • National Welfare Coordination Centre

Chaplains undertake their duties ethically with a duty of care to Defence members and their families.

How to contact a Chaplain

Chaplains are located at Air Force bases across Australia and overseas. We have permanent Chaplains at all Australian bases except for Learmonth (WA), Curtin (WA) and Scherger (Qld). We also have a permanent Chaplain at Butterworth (Malaysia).

To contact your closest Chaplain, call the Defence switchboard on 1300 333 362 and ask for the Duty Chaplain at the base closest to your home.

Alternatively, please raaf.chaplains [at] defence.gov.au (email us).

Chaplain Code of Conduct (Safe Ministry)

Air Force chaplaincy must be characterised by good ministry practice, and we aim to maintain good and ethical conduct.

Chaplains are required to adhere to Defence Force instructions and the Codes of Conduct set by their respective churches. The Codes of Conduct often include areas of behaviour considered 'acceptable' in general society but 'unacceptable' from a Christian/Church perspective. A selection of the Codes of Conduct can be found on the following websites:

Should you have any concerns about Chaplains misconduct, abuse and incidents you can contact the Defence Family Helpline on 1800 624 608.
